REVIVING STAR TREK

As we mourn the passing of actor James Doohan who immortalized the character of Montgomery Scott, better known as Scotty, the wonderful engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise, I can't help but miss the classic original series which made me fall in love with the speculative fiction genre. STAR TREK, especially that original "five year mission," (which was sadly cut short before its time) was a big reason why I became a fan of science fiction and fantasy. I think it would be a great idea whenever the franchise gets revived either on the big screen or on the boob tube if they simply reinvented the original (a la BATTLESTAR GALACTICA), with new actors playing Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Uhura, Chekhov, and yes, even Scotty. This has actually been an idea of mine for years. No one can replace the original actors, but in my mind its those characters that will forever live on as icons. The characters have transcended the actors who originally played them. The original characters deserve to live on in brand new adventures. Just like James Bond continues to live on but Sean Connery's interpretation will never be forgotten, or like Superman and Batman live on in various incarnations but the wonderful actors who brought them to life still live on forever in our memories, so too will the legacy of the original cast never die as long as the characters continue in new stories. If ever another actor says "Beam me up, Scotty," I know we will always think of James Doohan.
